MABI
MABI provides a fast, practical route to black carbon measurement from aerosol filter samples. Developed by ANSTO and available from Thomson Environmental Systems (TES), the Multi-wavelength Absorption Black Carbon Instrument measures light absorption across seven wavelengths, giving environmental consultants and scientists stronger data for investigating particulate pollution, combustion emissions and atmospheric processes.

Designed for typical 25 mm and 47 mm aerosol filters, MABI delivers a complete seven-wavelength measurement in less than 35 seconds. Its compact desktop format and USB connection make it straightforward to integrate into laboratory workflows, project-based monitoring programs and research campaigns. Digital acquisition software provides data in CSV format for import into Excel and other analysis platforms.
Why measure black carbon with MABI?
Black carbon is a significant component of fine particulate pollution, with relevance to air quality, public health, visibility and climate forcing. However, black carbon particles can originate from different combustion sources and vary in size, density and optical properties. A single-wavelength approach may not capture that complexity.
MABI measures transmission from ultraviolet through to infrared wavelengths: 405, 465, 525, 639, 870, 940 and 1050 nm. This multi-wavelength data helps users assess the contribution of different light-absorbing carbon sources, including diesel vehicle emissions and biomass burning. It supports a more informed interpretation of black carbon concentration results where source influences matter.
Built for filter-based air monitoring
MABI is purpose-built for the aerosol filters already used in many ambient air, source-apportionment and exposure-monitoring programs. Compatible filter holders are supplied for 25 mm and 47 mm filters, including common polycarbonate, Teflon and stretched Teflon media. The analysis is non-destructive, so filters can remain available for complementary techniques such as ion beam analysis (IBA) or X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
That makes MABI a useful addition to multi-method particulate characterisation. Measure optical absorption, retain the sample, then combine results with elemental, chemical or gravimetric data to develop a clearer picture of airborne particulate sources and impacts.
Applications for environmental research and consulting
MABI black carbon instruments are suited to ambient air quality studies, urban pollution assessments, roadside and transport emission investigations, woodsmoke and bushfire smoke monitoring, industrial surveys, visibility research and atmospheric science. They can also support long-term filter archive analysis, helping teams extract additional value from samples collected during previous monitoring programs.
For consultants, MABI offers rapid turnaround for filter measurements and a defensible dataset that can strengthen reporting, interpretation and client recommendations. For researchers, it provides repeatable multi-wavelength measurements that can be integrated with wider aerosol datasets.
MABI from TES delivers reliable, filter-based black carbon analysis. If you need to confirm filter compatibility, understand the measurement workflow or discuss how MABI fits within your monitoring program, contact the TES team for practical product support.
